If you find yourself with free time Friday morning, sample some locally grown organic fare at the new Farmer’s Market at The Lakes in Thousand Oaks. The new open-air market debuts Friday, July 22, 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Admission is free, and like most Farmer’s markets there is sure to be some free samples of farm-raised fruits and veggies.
Open every Friday, the market features dozens of vendors including those offering dairy products, fresh-caught seafood, and fresh cut flowers.
Crack open a pistachio at Santa Barbara Pistachios, savor a strawberry at Finley Farm, or wonder at the tropical plants at Liquid Landscapes. Stop by Hayground Organic Gardening for unique organic seedlings of fruit and vegetable plants or pick up a fresh catch-of-the-day at Anjin II’s fish stall. Other vendors include Etheridge Farm, Spring Hill Cheese of Petaluma, Ace Ranch, McGrath Farm, Munak Ranch, and Tom Shepherd-Shepherd Salad.

LAUNCH HAS BEEN SCRUBBED FOR AT LEAST 48 HOURS DUE TO A TECHNICAL GLITCH
It’s a go for a FREE public showing of the U.S. Space Shuttle Endeavour’s last flight into space, at Griffith Observatory on Friday, April 29.
The launch will be televised live and Observatory staff members will be on hand, providing commentary and answering questions. This marks the 25th launch of Endeavour, the last orbiter constructed in the Space Shuttle fleet.
The free watch party will be at the Observatory’s Leonard Nimoy Event Horizon theater, 12:30 to 1:15pm, provided that the launch stays on schedule. Please check www.nasa.gov for updated status reports on the launch.
Parking is free but limited; available only in the south end of the parking lot and along East Observatory Road. Access is via Vermont Avenue, past the Greek Theatre and LEFT before the tunnel.
Get there early for parking so you don’t miss the lift-off!
The iconic Brat Pack film of 80s teen romance celebrates its 25th year with a FREE outdoor showing at Nokia Plaza on Tuesday, May 3. It’s part of the 17th annual L.A. Film Fest, which will have its 2011 lineup of films announced earlier that day.
Pretty in Pink director Howard Deutch and special guests will be in attendance, along with LA Film Festival director Rebecca Yeldham, Artistic Director David Ansen & Managing Director Gloria Campbell.
L.A. Live will be the hub for this year’s fest, June 16 to June 26. Attend the free showing in 80s attire and receive two vouchers for the L.A. Film Fest. Movie starts at 7pm; pink beer & wine garden opens at 5pm. Discounted passes and packages for the upcoming film fest will be available for purchase.
Light the way to peace and prosperity during the Chinese American Museum’s free family-friendly Lantern Festival, Saturday, March 5. The traditional fest, marking the end of the Chinese New Year’s celebrations is held around the 15th day of the 1st lunar month. The Los Angeles celebration happens from noon until 7pm at El Pueblo de Los Angeles Historical Monument, the historic site of L.A.’s original Chinatown.
Located across the street from Union Station, the free Lantern Fest offers the LARGEST variety of interactive arts, crafts and educational activities celebrating the Lunar New Year holiday in Los Angeles. Activities focus on cultural, historical and educational fun.
The pueblo’s plaza is turned into a colorful re-creation of a traditional Chinese village street fair with artist-led workshops such as kitemaking, Chinese calligraphy, Chinese paper-cutting, origami, face-painting and the festival’s signature lantern-making booths. New activities include collage-making (based on Amy Tan’s novel, The Joy Luck Club), “Found Objects” print workshop (based on CAM’s Remembering Angel Island exhibit), Chinese Zodiac Cards-water coloring workshop (provided by the Getty Museum), and Year of the Rabbit-inspired greeting-card making.
Discover the culinary customs of the holiday at the free-standing exhibition, Lucky Feast, a re-created traditional Chinese New Year dinner table. Look for the fruits, vegetables, food dishes, and decorations that are considered lucky to eat or decorate in one’s home or business during Chinese New Year.
Meet Popular children’s author, Oliver Chin, who will autograph and do readings from his latest book, Year of the Rabbit. Watch free performances featuring Chinese lion dances, martial arts, musical, magical, and acrobatic acts. A captivating shadow puppetry show and a spirited glow-in-the-dark silver dragon stage performance close out the fest.

Get an actor’s eye view of the fashions that costumed the characters in the top films of 2010 for FREE at the Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising’s (FIDM) museum in Los Angeles.
The 19th annual Art of Motion Picture Costume Design Exhibition at FIDM’s Museum & Galleries in L.A. is free through Saturday, April 30. See the luminous green gown and pink burlesque costume worn by Christina Aguilera as Ali, in the film Burlesque (pictured above). Both created by designer Michael Kaplan. Always popular, the free exhibition is a unique opportunity to view up close the details of 100 costumes from 21 movies.
Experience the old West of True Grit, the fantasy of Alice in Wonderland and dream world of Inception. Other movie costumes include those from Clash of the Titans, The King’s Speech, The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader and Prince of Persia.

Offerings include Buy 1 admission to The Grammy Museum and get 1 free, get a free gift with coupon when you visit the free admission California Science Center, or get 50% off adult tickets to the National History Museum.

Master the fine art of experiencing free family-friendly fun in L.A. with Walt Disney Music Hall’s World City shows on select Saturdays. Upcoming Sat. Jan. 22 is a masterful puppet theater performance from Taiwan.
Directed by Taiwan’s leading female puppeteer, Shi-Mei Chiang, Chen Kuai Le Puppet Theater has perfected this traditional art, which can be seen for free at 11am and 12:30pm. The theater is also devoted to the training of new puppeteers; the company includes Chiang’s son and grandson. In additional to the wonderfully colorful puppets, the performance is accompanied by live traditional Taiwanese music.
Tickets are required but are FREE. Here’s how to get them on a first come first serve basis: They are distributed on Grand Avenue at 2nd Street. Tickets for 11am performance given out starting at 10am. Tickets for 12:30pm performance distributed at 11am.
